The Brioche Stitch creates a thick, lofty, stretchy fabric, that appears similar to a 1×1 rib. The technique uses yarn overs. Two-color patterns are worked with a single color strand per row. Brioche stitch is a great choice for creating hats, scarves, and sweaters that are as lofty and luxurious as the light and buttery brioche bun. Twined Knitting is a traditional Scandanavian knitting technique dating back at least to the 17th century. Using two strands of yarn, simultaneously, each strand is knit alternately, twisting the strands between each stitch. This technique is also called “two-end knitting”. Traditionally, the two ends of one ball of yarn are used. The resulting fabric is firmer and denser than regular stockinette stitch. It is a great technique for creating warm winter garments and accessories. (from http://knitty.com/ISSUEwinter05/FEATwin05TT.html)
Entrelac is a knitting technique that is used to create a textured diamond pattern. The pattern is made up of interconnected squares with two different orientations, creating a “basket-weave” effect. A unique feature of entrelac is the fact that a single “row” of knitting actually contains a number of shorter rows within a square. The “basket-weave” effect happens when the knitter picks up stitches along the side edge of an existing square, then knits along them. (Adapted from “Entrelac” at www.en.m.wikipedia.org.)
