Did you know? Merino sheep are one of the most historically relevant and economically influential breeds of sheep, originating around the 12th century in Extremadura, a province in southwestern Spain. This breed of sheep and its wool played a critical role in the development of 15th and 16th century Spain, which held a monopoly on its trade. Until the 18th century, export of Merino sheep from Spain was a crime punishable by death. Modern versions of the Merino breed were developed in New Zealand and Australia. Merino sheep were introduced into the United States in Vermont in 1802.
Modern Merino sheep cannot survive well without regular shearing. They must be shorn at least once a year because their wool does not stop growing. If they are not shorn regularly, the overabundance of wool can cause heat stress, mobility problems, and even blindness.
Merino wool is fine and soft. Unlike traditional wool, the fibers are smooth and non-irritating, creating fabrics that are comfortable to wear against the skin, extremely warm and odor-free.
