Did you know? Merino sheep are one of the most historically relevant and economically influential breeds of sheep. This breed originated around the 12th century in southwestern Spain. Until the 18th century, export of Merino sheep from Spain was a crime punishable by death. Modern versions of the Merino breed were developed in New Zealand and Australia. Merino sheep were introduced into the United States in Vermont in 1802.
Modern Merino sheep cannot survive well without regular shearing. Because their wool does not stop growing, they must be shorn regularly or an overabundance of wool can cause heat stress, mobility problems, and even blindness.
Merino wool is fine and soft. Unlike traditional wool, the fibers are smooth and non-irritating. As a result, fabrics created from Merino wool are comfortable to wear against the skin, extremely warm and odor-free.
